In August 1924, with The Palace closed for refurbishments (most notably the addition of its new façade), Letchworth saw the opening of a new cinema.
The Rendezvous opened in the concert hall of the United Services Club. This was primarily a club for ex-servicemen, located on Norton Way South, where the bowling green and Howard Gardens Social Centre are now.
Films began on the August Bank Holiday Monday in 1924 and thereon normally ran for three days from Mondays and Thursdays. The first film shown was ‘The Ne’er Do Well’ starring Thomas Meighan.
When the Palace re-opened later in 1924, the Rendezvous - which had promoted itself as “not the biggest, but the best” - seems to have gradually declined. Its last screening was ‘Passion’s Pathway’, starring Estelle Taylor, in April 1927.
