Women in Letchworth Garden City
Our latest special exhibition explores the fascinating stories of some of the town’s women.
It features some of the first pioneers who came to the new Garden City and strove to make the town a success and to help look after its early residents – women like Annie Lawrence and Juliet Reckitt who made their mark on the town by founding two of its grandest buildings (The Cloisters and Howgills Friends Meeting House respectively).
It tells the story of Letchworth’s militant Suffragettes who gave their all in the fight to get women in Britain the vote.
And it also explores the everyday lives of the town’s wives, mothers and daughters, the women who worked and shopped and lived in the town. The exhibition is packed full of old photographs, fascinating objects & dresses from the museum’s collections as well as paintings by some of Letchworth’s finest female artists.
There’s lots for all ages, including our latest addition – enjoy a pot of fair trade tea or cafetiere of fair trade coffee in the museum’s brand new café, all served on our nicest vintage china!
