The Edwardian Photographer - Letchworth Garden City 1904-1909

A snapshot of early Letchworth Garden City on camera through the pages of a recently-rediscovered and conserved photograph album.

This special exhibition is inspired by the work of an unknown Edwardian photographer whose photographs chart the first years of the Garden City.

Contained within the album’s pages are unique and unusual photographs which can now be seen because of the album’s painstaking conservation. They tell the story of the great ‘Garden City’ taking shape, its residents starting their new lives, businesses, and making Ebenezer Howard’s ideas a glorious (if muddy) reality!

The images show the growing town, depicting the foundations of Letchworth through its first roads, houses, industries, early public buildings and important early Garden City events that made the town what it is today.

The museum was awarded a substantial grant by the Association of Independent Museums to conserve the fragile album. This exhibition celebrates this unique item and demonstrates the important duty that the museum has to safeguard our Garden City heritage so that it can be enjoyed by future generations.

'THEN & NOW'

This new feature reveals some classic Letchworth Garden City views from the past and replicates them today

‘Then & Now’ was put together in partnership with Letchworth Garden City Camera Club to celebrate their 90th anniversary in their 2011-12 Season. For the project, the Camera Club hand-picked a selection of classic old photographs of the town and set out to capture the same views today. The results are fantastic and are on proud display in the museum now.

The museum is also proud to be hosting the Camera Club's 2012 Annual Exhibition, in February - for more details click here.
