Harkness Roses

Harkness’ Roses, world acclaimed Rose Breeders and competition winners, are renowned locally for their highly successful rose nursery.

1879 saw The Harkness family’s first nursery was founded by brothers John and Robert at Bedale, Yorkshire, in 1879. The acclaim received by these first time rose growers soon meant they could expand and the company headed south and took a plot between Hitchin and Letchworth, to the nursery still used by Harkness’ Roses to this day.

Ogle Design

Many of Ogle’s iconic designs

David Ogle Ltd. was established in 1960 and based on Birds Hill.

They were responsible for many iconic car designs, such as the Reliant Scimitar GTE and versions of the Mini, Riley 1.5 and Aston Martin V8. They also designed a ‘Popemobile’ for The Vatican.

In 1970 they designed the ‘Bond Bug’, a small orange three-wheeled car. Over two thousand were built and today they are collector’s items with their classic retro look. Ogle went on to design a more famous three-wheeled car, the Reliant Robin.

Foster & Scott Menswear

This popular menswear shop was based in The Arcade and was at its peak in the 1950s and 60s, selling items like the "Aquatite" raincoat.

St. Edmundsbury Weaving Works

St Edmundsbury Weaving Works

The St Edmundsbury Weaving Works was one of Letchworth Garden City’s most fascinating early industries

Established by Edmund Hunter in 1902, in Haslemere, Surrey, the company was already a success when the Hunters moved to Letchworth Garden City in 1908, having frequently exhibited and won awards. Working with architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin, the Hunters built their home, St Brighid’s, in Sollershott West, and their factory in Ridge Road.  Both buildings remain today.

Notts Bakers

Notts began as a small shop on Leys Avenue in 1907. As the population of Letchworth Garden City swelled from a few hundred in those days to 22,000 in 1957, so Notts grew with it to become a huge local operation with 11 stores, 2 halls, and a fleet of delivery vans and mobile shops.

On Feb 27th 1907 Mr Fred Nott married Miss Rose Richardson, and the next week he started the tiny bakery business in the Garden City. The book-keeping was done in between housekeeping by Mrs Nott and the business started with two handcarts and a small bakery on the premises.

Letchworth's Motor Industry

The earliest exponents of the Garden City Movement appealed to industrialists the advantages of relocating to Letchworth Garden City. These benefits were to include good houses, no pollution, plenty of space, low rents and a healthy and efficient workforce. The factories would be placed in a designated area, away from shops, parks and housing, a concept that has only recently become more common nationwide.

Oto Mills

Many people associate cereal manufacture with Welwyn Garden City but little known is that – even if only for a few year – Letchworth, the world’s first Garden City, had its own thriving puffed cereal industry -  Oto Mills, Cream of Cereals.
