Architects Barry Parker & Raymond Unwin
Architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin were appointed to design a master plan for the first Garden City using Ebenezer Howard's design for new communities. Their 1903 layout plan was based on the principles of land use with defined areas for commercial and industrial development, varied residential districts and an agricultural belt. The plan set out the environmental standards for the 20th Century.
Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin went on to become two of the major pioneers of Town planning in Britain. Both received worldwide acclaim for their visionary designs in their lifetime.
The First Garden City Heritage Museum is based in the original 1907 architectural offices which Barry Parker built and worked in, and visitors are able to visit Barry Parker’s original office, furnished much as it was when he was working here, and full of his watercolours and Arts & Crafts furniture.
