Edwardian Fun of the Fair at the Heritage Museum

Saturday 6th August saw over 250 visitors step back in time at our Edwardian Summer Fete. To coincide with the current special exhibition ‘The Edwardian Photographer’ the museum garden was transformed into all the ’traditional fun of the fair’ with old-fashioned games and competitions.

This event brought the black and white photographs of the museum’s current exhibition back to life treating visitors to a scene reminiscent of Letchworth’s pioneering years.

A busy few months!...

Hello...

Sorry it's been a while since the last blog - the museum team has been especially busy over the past two months with festivals to attend, exhibitions to organise, walks and talks, and our ‘Open Doors Week’ which saw nearly 500 school children taking part in Edwardian fun at the museum.

Museum Team take a hike!!

Museum Team take a hike - on the Garden City Charity Walk, 15 May 2011

Morning

Josh and Lindsay from the Museum were joined by Foundation colleague Lorraine Roberts in a Charity Walk in Letchworth this Sunday!

Organised by Letchworth Garden City Rotary Club, the 14-mile hike followed the route of the Garden City Greenway, through the town's Green belt, offering pleasant hills & fresh views of the world's first Garden City.

The LGCHF walking team were raising money for the Ernest Gardner Day Hospital's 'League of Friends' who help that unique institution and all the fantastic work they do.

Just a quick note to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who helped make our May Day at the Heritage Museum so special!

Over 140 people enjoyed a glorious day at the museum, with tea & cakes provided by local vintage types Buns & Bunting, FREE face painting by Face 2 Face of Baldock, lots of craft activities, some good old-fashioned British sunshine, and of course, the stars of the show, Letchworth Morris Men!

LGC in World War II closes

WWII Exhibition RIP - it closed on Saturday!

Busy times at the museum as we put together our forthcoming exhibition, 'Women in Letchworth Garden City', but it seemed worthwhile pausing for a moment to reflect on the last one...

Our all-singing all-dancing year-long spectacular, 'Letchworth Garden City in World War II' closed on Saturday (12 months after it opened). Over the course of exactly a year, over 7,500 people enjoyed the exhibition and its ambitious associated event programme.

International Womens Day

The Spirella Ladies Tug-of-War Team, c1913

Hello

Today is International Womens Day, which is "a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future". It honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success, and reminds of inequities still to be redressed. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday.

Hello all

Just a quick note to say THANK YOU to everyone who came along to our two recent code breaking events!

Thanks to all the visitors and volunteers who made the Code Breaking Fun Day such a memorable one. If you didn'tmake it here, you missed a cracking (literally) decoding competition trail and the chance to see a real German Enigma machine in action!

Swap Shop Fun and upcoming events!

The ladies from Buns & Buntings at our recent Vintage Swap Shop event

Firstly, a big Thank You to everyone who came along on Saturday (5th) and made our Vintage Swap Shop such a success!

Women!

Letchworth Carnival Queen finalists, c1970s.

Hello

Multi-tasking as ever here at the museum, whilst we're still adding to our current World War II displays and busily putting on a wide range of festive events, our attention is also now turning to our next exhibition, which opens in April 2011, entitled 'Women in Letchworth Garden City'.

Jelly Bean Competition - the result!!

How many jelly beans were in the museum's jar?...

Hello

Firstly a big Thank You to everyone who braved the elements on Saturday to come and visit Letchworth Garden City's Christmas Market, and everyone who popped in to see the Heritage Museum's stall with our displays about the history of Christmas, Letchworth Christmases past and some (unfortunately rather appropriate!) wintry photographs of Letchworth in the snow. A cold time was had by all!!
